Thai typing is straightforward once you learn the keyboard layout. Unlike Chinese or Japanese, there's no conversion step - you press a key and the Thai character appears directly.
The challenge: memorizing where 44 consonants, 32 vowels, and 4 tone marks live on the keyboard.
The Kedmanee Layout
Most Thai speakers use the Kedmanee (เกษมณี) layout, designed in 1932. It's the default on all devices.

Start with the most common consonants in the home position:

Vowel Placement Rules
Thai vowels go in different positions relative to the consonant:
Before Consonant
Type the vowel first, then the consonant:

After Consonant
Type consonant first, then vowel:
Above Consonant
Same as after - type consonant, then vowel:

Some vowels surround the consonant. Type in this order:

3. Watch Tone Mark Placement
Tone marks go on the consonant, not the vowel:

5. Use Both Hands
Shift is your friend. Train your pinky finger to hit Shift smoothly.
Alternative: Pattachote Layout
The Pattachote (ปัตตะโชติ) layout was designed for speed typing. It places:
Most common characters on strongest fingers
Vowels on left hand, consonants on right
Balanced workload between hands
It's faster for professionals but less common. Most learners should stick with Kedmanee since:
It's on every device
Most teaching materials use it
You can type on any Thai computer
Common Mistakes
1. Wrong Vowel Position
Wrong : าก (vowel before when it should be after)
Right : กา
Remember: เ, แ, โ go BEFORE the consonant when typing. Others go after.
2. Missing Tone Marks
Thai spelling requires tone marks even when predictable:
ก่อน (before) - not กอน
น้ำ (water) - not นำ
3. Confusing Similar Characters
Often Confused Different Characters บ vs ป b vs p sound พ vs ผ different consonant class ส vs ศ vs ษ same sound, different spelling
4. Forgetting ห นำ
Some words need a leading ห to change tone:
หมา (dog) - not มา (come)
หนา (thick) - not นา (rice field)
