Cultural Notes

Bargaining is common in Thai markets, especially at street markets and non-fixed-price shops. It's expected and part of the shopping culture. The phrase 'แพงไปหน่อย' (phɛɛŋ pai nɔ̀i) means 'a bit expensive' and is a polite way to start bargaining. 'ลดให้ได้ไหม' (lót hâi dâai mǎi) means 'can you give a discount?' When bargaining, be respectful and friendly. The seller will often counter-offer, and you can negotiate until you reach an agreement. 'รับเลย' (ráp ləəi) means 'I'll take it' and indicates you agree to the price. Note that bargaining is less common in department stores and malls where prices are fixed. # Exercises Section
