บทที่ 3 (Lesson 3) — High-Class Consonants I

Feel the Difference

Put your hand in front of your mouth and say these English words:

  • "kite" — feel the puff of air on "k"
  • "sky" — notice LESS air after "s"

That puff of air is called aspiration.

Why This Matters

Thai treats aspirated and unaspirated sounds as completely different letters:

SoundAirThai LetterLike English...
Unaspirated knoneกsky
Aspirated kpuffขkite

You already know ก (from Lesson 1). Now meet its aspirated partner:

ข
ข ไข่ (khɔ̌ɔ khài)
ส
ส เสือ (sɔ̌ɔ sʉ̌a)
ห
ห หีบ (hɔ̌ɔ hìip)

Shape Recognition

Each character has a memorable shape:

ข (egg) — Looks like ก with an extra loop. The extra loop = extra air!

ส(s) (tiger) — Curvy S-shape, like tiger stripes.

ห (box) — Looks like a box. หีบ(hìip) means "chest/box" — the shape matches!

Sound at Start vs End

Thai consonants sound different depending on position:

LetterStart of syllableEnd of syllable
ข eggkh (with air)k (no release)
ส(s) tigerst (no release)
ห boxh(not used)

The Rising Tone

Here's something powerful: consonant class determines tone.

High-class consonants + simple vowel = rising tone ↗

  • ข + า = ขา(khǎa) (khǎa) ↗ "leg"
  • ส(s) + ี = สี(sǐi) (sǐi) ↗ "color"
  • ห + า = หา(hǎa) (hǎa) ↗ "to find"

Compare to middle-class ก (flat mid tone):

  • ก + า = กา(kaː) (gaa) → "crow"

Same vowel, different consonant class = different tone!

You learned 3 high-class consonants:

CharNameSoundRemember
ขegg (ไข่(kʰ̀aj))kh-ก + loop = + air
ส(s)tiger (เสือ)s-S-curve shape
หbox (หีบ(hìip))h-Looks like a box

Key insight: High-class = aspirated (puff of air) + rising tone ↗
