Knowing how to ask for things politely and respond appropriately is essential for daily life. Thai has specific patterns for requests that show respect and make interactions smooth.
The most polite way to request something:
| Request | Meaning |
|---|---|
May I have some water? |
May I have a menu? |
May I have the bill? |
Excuse me / I'm sorry |
More direct, still acceptable:
| Request | Meaning |
|---|---|
I'll take this one |
I'll have coffee |
I don't want it |
For asking someone to do something:
| Request | Meaning |
|---|---|
Could you speak slowly? |
Could you write it down? |
Could you take a photo? |
Adding หน่อย makes any request softer:
| Without | With หน่อย | Effect |
|---|---|---|
More polite |
Please wait (soft) |
Could you help? |
| Response | When to Use |
|---|---|
Confirming something is correct |
Acknowledging, "yes, I understand" |
Yes, I can" / "Okay" |
Okay" (informal) |
| Response | When to Use |
|---|---|
No, that's not correct" |
Simple "no" |
I can't" / "It's not possible" |
I don't want it" |
It's okay" / "No problem" |
ขอโทษ works for both "excuse me" and "I'm sorry":
| Situation | Usage |
|---|---|
| Getting attention | ขอโทษครับ (Excuse me...) |
(Sorry, I'm late) |
| Passing by | ขอโทษครับ (Excuse me, coming through) |
| Response | Meaning |
|---|---|
No problem / You're welcome |
My pleasure |
With pleasure (formal) |
