บทที่ 3 (Lesson 3) — Negation
Introduction
Negation in Thai is simple: put ไม่ (mâi) before the verb or adjective. That's the core rule!
Basic Negation: ไม่ + Verb
| Positive | Negative |
|---|
| ผมกิน (I eat) | ผมไม่กิน (I don't eat) |
| เขาไป (He goes) | เขาไม่ไป (He doesn't go) |
| ดี (good) | ไม่ดี (not good) |
| แพง (expensive) | ไม่แพง (not expensive) |
ไม่ได้ (mâi dâai) - Can't / Didn't
ไม่ได้ is used for:
- Inability - can't do something
- Past negation - didn't do something
| Thai | Meaning |
|---|
| ผมไม่ได้ไป | I didn't go / I can't go |
| เขาไม่ได้กิน | He didn't eat / He can't eat |
| ทำไม่ได้ | Can't do it |
ไม่ใช่ (mâi châi) - Is Not
Use ไม่ใช่ to negate nouns (identity):
| Thai | Meaning |
|---|
| นี่ไม่ใช่หนังสือ | This is not a book |
| เขาไม่ใช่หมอ | He is not a doctor |
| ไม่ใช่ผม | It's not me |
ยังไม่ (yang mâi) - Not Yet
| Thai | Meaning |
|---|
| ยังไม่กิน | Haven't eaten yet |
| ยังไม่พร้อม | Not ready yet |
| ยังไม่ถึง | Haven't arrived yet |
ไม่เคย (mâi kəəi) - Never
| Thai | Meaning |
|---|
| ไม่เคยไป | Never been (there) |
| ไม่เคยกิน | Never eaten (it) |
| ไม่เคยเห็น | Never seen (it) |
Comparison Table
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|
| ไม่ + V | Simple negation | ไม่ชอบ (don't like) |
| ไม่ได้ + V | Can't / Didn't | ไม่ได้ไป (didn't go) |
| ไม่ใช่ + N | Is not (noun) | ไม่ใช่คนไทย (not Thai) |
| ยังไม่ + V | Not yet | ยังไม่เสร็จ (not finished yet) |
| ไม่เคย + V | Never | ไม่เคยลอง (never tried) |
Double Negatives
Thai doesn't use double negatives like English might avoid:
- ไม่มีอะไร (mâi mii à-rai) = "don't have anything" = nothing
Common Negative Expressions
| Thai | Meaning |
|---|
| ไม่เป็นไร | It's okay / Never mind |
| ไม่ต้อง | Don't need to / No need |
| ไม่มี | Don't have / There isn't |
| ไม่รู้ | Don't know |
| ไม่เข้าใจ | Don't understand |
Key Points
- ไม่ before verb/adjective - Basic negation
- ไม่ได้ - Can't or didn't
- ไม่ใช่ - Negates nouns (identity)
- ยังไม่ - Not yet
- ไม่เคย - Never (in the past)
